Broken Walls Restored Lives

Broken Walls Restored Lives

Written by Dr. Samuel D. Stephens, D.Min., The book of Nehemiah begins not with a building project but with a broken heart. Nehemiah was living comfortably in the Persian capital of Susa. As cupbearer to King Artaxerxes, he enjoyed influence, security, and privilege. Yet when he heard about the condition of Jerusalem—its broken walls, burned gates, and distressed people—his heart was deeply moved.

The book of Nehemiah is one of the most practical and inspiring leadership narratives in all of Scripture. Yet at its heart, it is not primarily a story about walls, construction, administration, or even leadership. It is a story about God working through an ordinary servant whose heart was broken by the things that broke the heart of God. As I reflect upon the challenges facing the Church today—persecution, social upheaval, community brokenness, leadership fatigue, spiritual decline, and the vast unfinished task of the Great Commission—I find Nehemiah's story profoundly relevant. The walls may be different, but the ruins remain. Across our communities and nations, we encounter broken lives, broken families, broken churches, and broken systems that desperately need restoration.
