The Beatitudes
Definition of "Blessed": The term implies a divine, inner joy and spiritual satisfaction that is independent of outward circumstances or material wealth. The Eight Characteristics: The Beatitudes describe the internal attitudes required of a citizen of God's kingdom, often contrasting with worldly values:
Poor in Spirit: Recognizing one's spiritual need and total dependence on God. Mourning: Having sincere sorrow for personal sins and the sins of the world. Meekness: Strength under control; a willingness to submit to God's will rather than asserting one's own rights. Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness: A passionate and continuous desire for spiritual holiness and God's upright standards. Merciful: Demonstrating compassion and forgiveness toward others as a reflection of God's mercy. Pure in Heart: Having a single-minded devotion to God and intentions free from selfishness. Peacemakers: Actively pursuing reconciliation and restoration between people and with God. Persecuted for Righteousness: Enduring hardship or ridicule for following Christ's counter-cultural way of life.1 Core Message: True righteousness is inward and based on character rather than external rules. It is a call to be "salt and light" by living out a radical identity that reflects the image of Christ. Promises: Each attitude is linked to a divine reward, such as inheriting the kingdom of heaven, being comforted, or seeing God.
